A new Era; Exploring the Fascinating B.C First Peoples Classes of Sutherland Secondary

This year Sutherland Secondary was introduced to Indigenous education. One of those new courses was B.C First Peoples, a course that focused on the relationship between Indigenous peoples and colonizers from the 1700’s to today. The main points highlighted were about the injustices shown towards the Indigenous, and what must be done to make amends. These lessons were taught through lectures, videos, and text from both perspectives to provide students with a complete idea of how a situation was approached. With these lessons come a goal to remind all Canadians about the truth, the 94 calls of action, and the history of the settled lands.

Students Nima Dini and Oliver Crook took it upon themselves to visit one of the B.C First Peoples teachers located in the D wing, Mr. ChaddockMr. Chaddock conveyed great excitement in being a part of history, whilst simultaneously valuing the role given to him in influencing the future generations. When asked about this course's future impact, Mr. Chaddock expressed uncertainty but hoped for a brighter future.

Whether you don’t care, think it’s boring, or see no significance, the important thing is to learn about doing the right thing, and serving justice towards not only the Indigenous peoples, but the land as well.
